Blogging
As you know, because you are reading this blog, we have started to put some blogs up on the Business IT Guide. This is our way of highlighting various IT issues that may be of interest to those in business.
Blogs are a great for putting across a message or a piece of information succinctly and to the point, but do they add any real value? In my experience the vast majority of blogs seem to be soapboxes for people to rant from rather than add any value. As such it is often difficult for the more interesting blogs to be heard.
So people often ask me whether they should start their own blog.
For many a blog can act as a great publicity tool and a can be a good way of raising your profile. This is especially so if you work in a specialist industry and feel you want to make insightful comments for others to read. But if you want to comment on what was on the telly last night then you are probably better off using a pseudonym rather than your real name!
Blogs do take a lot of time and effort – more so if writing does not come naturally to you. On that basis alone you will need to consider if blogging is really worth the time and trouble. What return on investment are you hoping to see? Is blogging going to increase your profits at the end of the year?
If blogging is too much commitment then you could consider joining an industry forum and contributing to online discussions. That way you can demonstrate your knowledge and skills without the requirement for a regular blog. Just be cautious what and how you say it or you may find your reputation takes a bashing.
